The Walking Rugby 79ers are a great way to stay playing the game whatever your experience or fitness.

The Walking Rugby section of Lowestoft & Yarmouth Rugby Club now have their own shirts and identity as the L&Y 79ers.

The 79ers is a reference to the year the Club was founded in 1879 and for which the Club is celebrating its 140th year this season.

The shirts were sponsored by locally based firms Tredwell Developments Ltd, R&G Cooper Engineering Ltd and Charity & Taylor Ltd.

The Walking Rugby Section meet on a Monday evening at 7pm, sessions are open to all to attend, no previous experience of the game is required. A two handed touch above the waist replaces a tackle, the game is played with a size 4 (smaller) ball to assist in handling and passing, tries are scored by walking over the try line.

The Club will be taking part in the Walking Sports Festival being organised by Lowestoft A Go Go on the 15th September and a week later the Walking Rugby team is scheduled to make its competitive debut at Newent Rugby Club’s Festival away in Gloucestershire.

One of the players is the Club President Russ Wilson who commented that the introduction of Walking Rugby was another example of the Clubs ongoing commitment to widen sporting participation within the community in a safe and hugely enjoyable environment and helping to prove that Rugby really is Good for You and truly a game to suit all ages.
