In the final game of the season, Lowestoft and Yarmouth took part in Norfolk RFU Big Rugby Weekend, facing Beccles in the Norfolk Men’s Junior Cup final, in what proved to be a nail-biting bout.
Beccles started strongly, applying pressure well before their hard work eventually paid off when they scored the first try of the game in the corner, putting themselves five points up. Beccles held the momentum for much of the first half and went into half-time with their five point advantage.
Lowestoft and Yarmouth, however, inevitably began to grow into the game and started to dictate more of the play. They were patient and persistent and eventually rewarded when Josh Williamson scored the equalising try after some impressive work from the L&Y forward pack.
With the game now on a knife edge, both teams pushed for glory and Beccles who struck next. After being awarded a penalty, they opted to kick for the posts and were successful in their attempts, making the score 5-8.
Despite the setback, L&Y refused to give up hope and rallied forward. Once again, their pressure proved too much and Fin Rearie put Lowestoft and Yarmouth back in front after an incredibly strong maul allowed them to drive over the try line.
With the score at 10-8, L&Y controlled the pace of the game well, and after a superb tackle by Louis Smedley, the final whistle went and Lowestoft and Yarmouth were crowned champions.
Overall, it was a fantastic, end to end game, with Lowestoft and Yarmouth capping off their magnificent season in the best possible way. The man of the match awards were given to Harry Crannage and Alfie Tiffen.
