Lowestoft and Yarmouth Under 16’s enjoyed a trip to Harwich for a 10-a-side festival, played in great spirit by all the teams. Our team made the long trip with a strong 15 man squad and started the 5 team tournament against Hadleigh. They made a great start scoring twice, before hadleigh replied. L&Y went on to score 2 more tries, with a total of 4 drop kick conversions and the match ending with a 28-7 win.

After a short break they were back in action against Felixstowe. L&Y again started brightly with an early score but Felixstowe were quick to hit back. In an end to end game, which summed up the entertaining rugby every team put on throughout the day, each side again scored making it 2 a piece, Felixstowe winning with 2 conversions to none. After a disallowed try for L&Y, Felixstowe had the final say, scoring to win the game 10-21.

The third game was against hosts Harwich & Dovercourt. L&Y continued their habit of started strongly, scoring from the kick off. They didn’t look back, scoring a total of 7 tries in the game. H&D finished the game strongly and rallied to score 2 tries, with the game finishing 35-10.

The final game of the day saw L&Y take on Haverhill in what would be a decisive game. Both teams played some great, flowing rugby and scored some really well worked team tries. Ultimately L&Y’s 4 tries overcame Haverhill’s 3 converted efforts with a final score of 22-21.

With 3 points for a win L&Y, Felixstowe and Hadleigh were all tied on 9 points after 3 wins. A triangle of results, with L&Y beating Hadleigh, but losing to Felixstowe, who themselves lost to Hadleigh, meant that the tournament was decided on point difference and L&Y claimed the win by just a 4 point margin over second placed Hadleigh.

Despite the long trip it was a great day for the whole squad; forwards Doug, Ryan, Harry, Harley, Jai, Alfie, Cain and Frankie were rock solid in defence, made numerous turnovers including in the scrums and were relentless in the breakdowns. In the backs Tom H, Tom L, Tommy, Sydney, Kobe, Will and Dean played some great rugby, cutting some great lines, putting pressure on the opposition in defence and capitalising on the foundation their forwards had given them. A thank you must also go to our hosts, Harwich and Dovercourt, as well as the parents who stepped in at the last minute to offer lifts - without them we wouldn’t even have made it!
